Video downloader not detecting the video? 8 fixes
Updated 28 October 2026 · 4-minute read
The video is right there, playing. You click your downloader's icon and… nothing. Before you give up, work through these fixes in order. Most problems are solved by the first three.
1. Press play first
Most websites don't load the actual video until you press play. Until then, there's nothing for a downloader to find. Start the video, let it run a few seconds, then open the extension.
2. Wait a moment, then scan again
Some players load the real video a beat after the page, sometimes from inside a nested frame. Give it a few seconds and open the extension again. In Vidtuck, the Scan again button re-checks the page.
3. Reload the page
Downloaders can only see videos that load after they're running. If you installed the extension with the page already open, or the video started before you opened it, reload the page and press play again.
4. Skip the ad
If a pre-roll ad is playing, the downloader may only see the ad. Let it finish or skip it, then check again once the real video starts.
5. Using incognito? Allow the extension there
Extensions are off in incognito windows by default. Go to chrome://extensions, open your downloader's Details, and switch on Allow in Incognito.
6. Check whether it's DRM-protected
Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and most paid streaming lock their videos with DRM. No legitimate tool can save those. A good downloader tells you so instead of showing nothing — Vidtuck shows a clear DRM notice. (Why DRM blocks downloads.)
7. Is it YouTube?
Chrome Web Store rules don't allow extensions that download from YouTube, so most store downloaders — Vidtuck included — don't support it, by design.
8. Check the stream type
Most streaming video uses a format called HLS (.m3u8), which good downloaders capture well (how m3u8 downloads work). Some sites use a different format called DASH (.mpd). Vidtuck can see DASH streams but can't download them yet — if that's what you're hitting, the honest answer is "not yet."
Still nothing?
Some sites are simply unusual. In Vidtuck, the empty screen has a Report a site button: send the page and we'll look at it. Site reports are how detection gets better for everyone.
And if your current downloader fails all of these checks on ordinary sites, it may be time for a better one — Vidtuck is free to try.
